Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage says that he is not satisfied with the investigations conducted into the allegations on the 2011 cricket World Cup finals.
The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Sports Ministry has concluded the probe on the match-fixing allegations relating to the 2011 Cricket World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India, after the Attorney General (AG) stated that the allegations raised in this regard were baseless and had no evidence whatsoever to pursue a case.
In June 2020, former Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage had claimed that the 2011 cricket World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India was fixed.
The SIU of the Sports Ministry had thereafter launched an investigation into the Minsiter’s allegations.
Several former Sri Lanka cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga, and Aravinda de Silva recorded statements with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over the allegations.
The AG, announcing his decision, had revealed that Minister Aluthgamage’s allegations were baseless and the investigation is not required to be continued further.
SJB MP Mujibur Rahman today raised a question in Parliament, questioning why no action was taken against Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage for making false allegations.
Responding to MP Mujibur Rahman, Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa said that if action was taken against complainers on these issues, no one would come forward in the future to give any information or complaint against match fixing relating to Sri Lanka.
Responding to the allegation, Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage blamed the Police for not conducting a proper inquiry over his allegations.
He said that he never said that players were involved and the Police had made a mess by questioning players, instead of officials involved.
The Minister also said that he could not become no 1 in the last election due to this issue, as some had campaigned against him and urged people not to vote for him. (NewsWire)
