21A approved by Cabinet – Harin Fernando

The 21st Amendment to the Constitution was tabled and passed in the Cabinet today, Minister Harin Fernando said.

Minister further said that the 21st Amendment will be tabled in the Parliament soon.

“Like to thank Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe for pushing it through,” he added.

The 21st Amendment calls for the repealing of the 20th Amendment, specifically reducing President’s powers.

It also calls for the re-enactment of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving more power to the Parliament.

The exact clauses of the 21st Amendment is unclear as the approved document is yet to be revealed to the public.

However, reducing the President’s powers and the re-enactment of the 19th Amendment are the key changes expected in the proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution. (NewsWire)
