A 37-year-old man who had reportedly stabbed a police officer has died after being shot by the police.
The incident has taken place in Pitigala police division where a police officer who had gone to inquire on a complaint had been stabbed by the suspect.
Later, a team lead by OIC of the Pitigala police station had left to the scene to investigate and aid the injured police officer, the police said in a statement.
As per the police, the suspect who had earlier stabbed the police officer had tried to attack the police team with a sharp weapon and also tried to throw an object similar to a hand grenade at the police team. One more police officer had sustained cut injuries due to this incident.
The police further said that following this, the police officers had shot at the suspect to avoid further causality and in self defence.
The injured suspect and the two police officers had been admitted to the Elpitiya Base Hospital. The suspect had later been transferred to the Karapitiya teaching hospital, where he had succumbed to his injuries.
