“60% of registered vehicles are not in good running condition”

The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has a total of 8.1 million vehicles registered in Sri Lanka.

Assistant Commissioner to the J.A.S. Jayaweera said among the registered vehicles 60% are not in good running condition.

He said out of the total registrations 80% were personal vehicles, while 4.6 million motorcycles and 1.1 million three-wheelers were also registered.

The vehicles identified as not in good running condition are made up of 50% of the registered vehicles and are mainly motorcycles and three- wheelers.

Jayaweera added that even though close to 8.1 million vehicles were registered, Sri Lanka’s road capacity, which is 112, 000 km, is insufficient for the number of registered vehicles.

He mentioned this during a media briefing held to mark the ‘Fifth National Accident Prevention Week”. (Newswire)
