90 day detention order for businessman remanded for hate speech on Facebook

A businessman who was remanded for sharing contents of hate speech via Facebook, has been ordered to be handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohamad Mihar today ordered Prison officials to immediately hand over the suspect to the CID for investigations.

Filing a motion, the CID had informed court that a large sum of money had been deposited in a suspicious manner to the suspect’s personal bank account.

Stating that the Defence Secretary had issued a detention order for 90-days to interrogate the suspect, the CID requested the court to issue an order for the suspect to be handed over to the Department.

Businessman Fawaz Mohamad Nisar, who was arrested on Tuesday (13) on charges of publishing statements on Facebook allegedly inciting racial tensions, was remanded till today.

The businessman is reported to have shared content on his personal Facebook account that were deemed to have incited racial tensions and were considered to be demeaning Buddhist monks and other individuals. (NewsWire)
