School trips to be restricted to 100 km maximum distance for a day – report

The Ministry of Education’s attention has been drawn to permitting school educational tours to a certain distance that enables students to return home before nightfall.

According to Swarnavahini, Ministry officials are working on introducing new laws that allow school educational tours within a 100 km distance per day.

The Education Ministry intends to issue a circular limiting school excursions to a maximum of 100 km distance and the buses returning to schools before 6.30 pm on tour days.

The Ministry is taking such measures following the recent fatal accident in Nanuoya involving a van, a three-wheeler, and a school excursion bus.

Five people, including three children who were travelling in the van and the driver of the three-wheeler, had died after the school excursion bus from a private boy’s school in Colombo crashed into the two vehicles. (NewsWire)
