WATCH : Special statement from Acting President

A committee, comprising the Chief of Defence Staff, Tri-forces Commanders, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been appointed to control the current situation in Sri Lanka, Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced today.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is also the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, said that the committee has also been instructed to ensure the security and the safety of the citizens during the ongoing protests.

He further accused protesters of resorting to fascism, adding that the emergency rule and curfew will be in place to prevent these efforts and to restore normalcy in the country.

The Prime Minister also stated that information has been received that a group within the anti-government protesters had colluded to storm the Prime Minister’s Office and the houses of the Navy and Air Force Commanders today.
