BASL condemns attacks on peaceful protesters

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has condemned the attacks on peaceful protesters in front of the Temple Trees in Colombo today.

Issuing a statement, the President of the Association, Saliya Pieris, PC, said the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has received reports of a gang of persons armed with poles and clubs marching from Temple Trees towards Galle Face.

He further said they have attacked anti-government protestors opposite Temple Trees.

Saliya Pieris said the BASL calls upon immediate action by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Police to prevent protestors from being attacked.

There will be grave repercussions by the inaction of the Government and the Police to deal with this situation, he warned.

His statement comes after Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters attacked peaceful protesters and destroyed several protest-related materials at the ‘Maina Go Gama’ set up in front of the Temple Trees and ‘Gota Go Gama’ set up at the Galle Face Green.

The SLPP supporters destroyed both the protest sites after attending a meeting with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees this morning. (NewsWire)
