Parliamentarian Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has resigned from his post of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
The MP announced his resignation in a letter addressed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, ahead of today’s Parliament session.
Siyambalapitiya said that his resignation comes in line with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s (SLFP) decision to function as an independent group in Parliament.
The SLFP yesterday announced that it has decided to quit the Government and will continue to function as an independent group in Parliament.
The decision comes after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Government did not heed the party’s calls to appoint an all-party caretaker government to address the current national crisis.
The SLFP called for the establishment of an all-party caretaker government after protests by the public became rampant across the country.
The public is engaged in peaceful protests calling for the resignation of the President and his Government over the worsening economic crisis in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
