Senior Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana says that the number of complaints received regarding cyber crimes in the country are on the rise.
He said that previously around 2500 complaints related to cyber offenses were received annually. However, currently around 15-20 complaints are received on a daily basis.
In most cases, the victims of cyber crime are females. Creating and circulating obscene images or videos using distorted images is a crime which can lead to a 3 year imprisonment, he said.
He further added that those who hack into computers and steal data / information are punishable by law with a prison term of up to 7 years.
The senior DIG reiterated that even though someone commits a cyber crime from a foreign country, if the victim is in Sri Lanka, there legal provisions to actions against the offenders. (NewsWire)
