US power plant deal : Three ministers file objections in court

Three Government Ministers have filed objections before the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka supporting the Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions that have been filed pertaining to the Yugadanavi Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya.

The objections were filed by Ministers Wimal Weearwansa, Udaya Gammanpila, and Vasudeva Nanayakkara yesterday.

Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions have been filed by the Ven. Elle Gunawanse Thero, the Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, and several trade unions against the deal.

In their objections, the three Government Ministers have pointed out that the Finance Minister had not presented a Cabinet paper on the matter during the Cabinet meeting.

Stating that the tender process has already been announced for the project, they said attempts underway to give the contract to a company that had not applied through the process is a violation of the law.

The Minister further pointed out that the said company had been established in 2018 and has no knowledge of Liquefied Natural Gas.

They also stressed the risks of handing over the country’s gas production to a foreign entity.

The Supreme Court is set to take up for consideration the petitions on the 16th and 17th of December. (NewsWire)
