Shermila Rajapaksha appointed as new DG of National Zoological Gardens Dept.

Shermila Rajapaksha has been appointed as the Director-General (DG) of the National Zoological Gardens Department.

Rajapaksha previously served as the Head of Social Media at the Presidential Secretariat until June 2020.

According to reports, Shermila Rajapaksha is set to assume duties as the DG of the National Zoological Gardens Department today (28).

Rajapaksha replaces former DG Ishini Wickremesinghe who stepped down in early September.

Wickremesinghe resigned voicing protest over the court’s decision pertaining to ongoing legal proceedings into incidents of elephant trafficking that took place primarily between 2010 and 2015.

In September, the court had directed 14 elephants under the charge of the National Zoological Gardens Department to be released to their so-called original “owners” for registration. (NewsWire)
