New study defines nine core long-COVID symptoms

Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of the Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Unit of the Sri Jayawardenepura University has revealed details of a new study which defined nine core long-COVID symptoms, occurring 90-180 days after COVID-19 was diagnosed.

“The term “long COVID” is commonly used to describe signs and symptoms that continue or develop after acute COVID-19. Includes both ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 (from 4 to 12 weeks) and post-COVID-19 syndrome (≥12 weeks)” Dr. Jeewandra said.

“Long-COVID symptoms were more frequent in those who had been hospitalised, and they were slightly more common in women.” he added.

New study defined nine core long-COVID symptoms, occurring 90-180 days after COVID-19 was diagnosed.

  • Abnormal breathing – 8%
  • Abdominal symptoms – 8%
  • Anxiety/depression – 15%
  • Chest/throat pain – 6%
  • Cognitive problems – 4%
  • Fatigue – 6%
  • Headache – 5%
  • Myalgia (muscle pain) – 1.5%
  • Other pain – 7%
