Cabinet approval granted to draft ‘Child Protection Act’

The Cabinet has granted approval to direct the Legal Draftsman to prepare the composite draft bill on child rights.

According to the government, ensuring the protection and well-being of children has become challenging due to the various changes that have occurred in society in recent times.

Common instances have been reported, especially, in which children are prone to various abuses, engaged in various abusive activities, as well as being deprived of their rights.

The government said therefore, it has been decided to formulate a composite act that ensures all rights declared in the Child Rights Convention in addition to the legal provisions existing for ensuring the security and protection of Sri Lankan children.

Previously, the Cabinet had already approved, as per their decision captioned ‘Next Twenty-Five Years’ dated 09.01.2023, to introduce a new act titled ‘Child Protection Act’.

Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal presented by the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Women, Child Affairs and Social Empowerment, to direct the Legal Draftsman to prepare the composite draft bill on child rights. (NewsWire)
