Police says that investigations have revealed that the hand grenade that was recovered from a private hospital in Narahenpita recently was handed over to the suspect by a former LTTE -cadre.
The Police had initially arrested the suspect who had set up the grenade inside a bathroom of the hospital on 14th September, and had tipped-off the Police with the intention of obtaining a reward.
However, further investigations had found that the man had been handed over the grenade by a former LTTE-cadre who is a resident of Uppuveli in Trincomalee.
The former LTTE- cadre, who is said to have served directly under late lTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran during the war, has been arrested by the Police.
Police said that further investigations had revealed that the former LTTE-cadre had exploited a poor man and had trained him for 06 days on setting up the hand grenade at the hospital.
It was also found that the chief suspect had shared images and information of other firearms with the first suspect.
The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and the State Intelligence Service (SIS) are continuing investigations into the matter.
The two Units are probing to ascertain if the hand grenade had been obtained from the house of a Minister on Wijerama Mawatha as claimed by the first suspect or via the former LTTE- cadre. (NewsWire)
