The Police have received a number of complaints on threats issued to teachers engaged in online education despite a trade union action launched by various Teachers Trade Unions over salary anomalies.
Two teachers have been summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today over the complaints and are reportedly being questioned by the authorities.
The two teachers are members of the Ceylon National Principals Association and Free Education Services Council which are engaged in the ongoing trade union action, which has affected many school children across the country.
A group, including the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin have reported arrived at the CID to express their support for the two teachers being grilled by the authorities.
Meanwhile, several Teachers Trade Unions have claimed that the Police has refused to take complaints of threats issued to teachers engaged in the trade union action.
Recently, Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Dr. Sarath Weerasekera had stated that teachers conducting online education could call the hotlines 118 or 119 and inform the Police if they are threatened by someone for not supporting the ongoing trade union actions.
Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe told reporters yesterday that, however, the Police are refusing to register complaints filed by teachers who are being threatened for participating in the trade union action.
Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) President Priyantha Fernando claimed that a number of incidents have been reported of Police officers in civil attire visiting the homes of teachers and principals involved in the ongoing trade union actions to collect information.
He accused the Government of intimidating those involved in the union actions in various way. (NewsWire)
