Sri Lanka to establish diplomatic relations with East Timor

The Cabinet has granted approval for Sri Lanka to establish formal diplomatic ties with Timor- Leste (East Timor).

The Government said East Timor has expressed its desire to establish formal diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka.

A number of countries, including India, China, Japan, and South Korea have established diplomatic relations with the country.

Establishing diplomatic ties with East Timor will be important for Sri Lanka to obtain support economically and politically as well as in Sri Lankan interventions in the international platform, the Government pointed out.

Accordingly, the proposal tabled by Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris to establish formal diplomatic relations with East Timor was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. (NewsWire)
