No further lockdowns : Health Minister hints

Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has hinted that the islandwide lockdown currently in effect may not be extended after Monday, the 30th of August.

According to Lankadeepa, the Minister said the decision will be taken after considering the proposals of several other people.

As a country with a low- economy, it is impossible to move forward with lockdowns, he pointed out.

Minister Rambukwella added that no country has solved its issues with regard to the coronavirus pandemic by imposing lockdowns.

Sri Lanka is currently under a 10-day lockdown which comes to an end on 30th August.

The islandwide lockdown was imposed after the country reported over 4000 Covid cases and nearly 200 deaths per day in the last few days.

Several individuals, including Government, Opposition, and health experts have been urging the authorities to extend the current lockdown to curtail the rapid spread of the virus. (NewsWire)
