Minister writes to President requesting to reconsider prior to deciding on lockdown

Imposing a lockdown in Sri Lanka to curtail the spread of the coronavirus is not a solution at present, Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga said.

In a letter addressed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the Minister accused the opposition of attempting to destabilize the country at this critical juncture.

Stating that the opposition had fueled multiple protests in the country disregarding health regulations, Minister Ranatunga said this has resulted in the significant spread of the virus.

The Minister pointed out that the general public will suffer in the event a lockdown is imposed by the Government.

He called on the President to consider the impact on the public and other sectors prior to drawing a decision on imposing a lockdown in the country.
