Family urges investigation after hospital misplaces Covid victim’s body

A complaint has been lodged by a son of a reportedly deceased Covid patient against Ragama hospital authorities over misplacing his mother’s body.

The now reportedly deceased patient had been admitted to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama on Thursday (12) after she had experienced breathing difficulties.

After administering oxygen, the patient had been admitted to ward No.30 of the hospital where Covid patients are being treated.

On the following day when her son had come to visit the patient, hospital authorities have informed that she had passed away and the body has been moved to the mortuary.

As the body was handed over to the relatives for identification on Friday evening, it has been revealed that the body handed over was not of the relevant patient and the hospital authorities have mistakenly identified a different body with the name tag of this patient.

Following the revelation, hospital authorities have checked with relatives of other bodies handed over on the 13th August to identify if/how the body of the concerned has been misplaced.

As of now, authorities have not been able to figure out the exact circumstances of this issue and the children of the deceased are waiting to confirm if their mother has indeed passed away, and if so to receive the body for last rites.

The son of the patient has also reportedly filed a complaint with the Police over the incident. (NewsWire)
