Several opposition activists were arrested in various areas today for staging protests in violation of the quarantine law.
Politburo member of the Frontline Socialist Party Duminda Nagamuwa was arrested along with four other suspects for staging a protest at Ramanayake Mawatha in Colombo this morning.
He along with the other suspects were arrested by the Slave Island Police and were produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
Meanwhile, former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Councilor Mahinda Jayasinghe was also arrested for staging a protest in violation of the quarantine law.
The Police said Jayasinghe was arrested along with another suspect for staging the protest in Pamunugama, Ja-Ela today, violating the quarantine law and a court order that was issued earlier preventing him from staging the protest.
However, National Organiser of the All Island Govi Jana Federation Namal Karunaratne and Former JVP Councilor Samantha Vidyaratna who were arrested for staging a protest in Boralanda on 1st July were released on bail.
Karunaratne and Vidyaratne were arrested along with three others for staging a protest in Boralanda, Bandarawela on 1st July in violation of the quarantine law.
The suspects, who were arrested after surrendering to the Police today, have been released on a personal bail of Rs. 100,000 each. (NewsWire)
