Individual arrested for threatening Moratuwa Mayor

An individual has been arrested for allegedly threatening the Mayor of Moratuwa Saman Lal Fernando during a phone call.

The Moratuwa Mayor was recently released on bail after being arrested on charges of obstructing the duties of healthcare workers during a COVID-19 vaccination drive in Moratumulla.

Fernando had filed a complaint with the Moratumulla Police claiming that the suspect had called him and inquired “දැන් සැපදැයි” (how does it feel now) after which he had also issued a death threat.

The Moratumulla Police had obtained a court order to secure call details of the suspect’s mobile number, after which an investigation had been conducted in this regard leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The investigations had confirmed that the suspect had made a call via his mobile to the Mayor of Moratuwa.

Further investigations had also revealed that on a previous occasion, a dispute had erupted between the suspect and the Mayor of Moratuwa over the removal of an illegally constructed wall in the Borupana area.

The suspect has been identified as a resident of the Thelawala area in Ratmalana. (NewsWire)
