An increase has been noted in the number of people attempting to violate the inter-province travel restriction that has been imposed in Sri Lanka, the Police said.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said 6003 vehicles were inspected in the 14 entry/exit points of the Western Province yesterday.
He said among them, 105 people in 61 vehicles had attempted to cross the provincial borders in violation of the travel restriction.
Despite an islandwide travel restriction being in effect in Sri Lanka due to the coronavirus pandemic, a ban has been imposed on inter-province travel as well.
DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspects who had attempted to cross borders yesterday have been warned and turned away.
However, he warned that not all violators are turned away, adding that some have been arrested, while their vehicles have been seized and legal action has also been filed against them.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka reported the highest number of arrests for a single day for the violation of quarantine regulations, after 1561 people were arrested yesterday.
DIG Ajith Rohana said 228 suspects were arrested in Kuliyapitiya, 165 in Kandy, and 137 in Matale.
He added that a total of 36,921 people have been arrested since October 2020 for the violation of the quarantine law. (NewsWire)
