Opposition Leader speaks to President over Ranjan

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has requested President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to grant a presidential pardon to former Gampaha District MP Ranjan Ramanayake.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader had pointed out that it was essential for the President to take into consideration the current state of Ramanayake and grant a presidential pardon.

MP Premadasa had revealed this during a meeting held with the Parliamentary group of the SJB at the Parliament Complex yesterday.

He further said the President had informed him to submit a written request in this regard.

Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake is currently imprisoned at the Angunukolapelessa prison on charges of contempt of court.

The Supreme Court sentenced him to four years rigorous imprisonment over the charges.
Following his conviction, Ramanayake’s Parliament seat was abolished, and he was replaced in Parliament by SJB member Ajith Mannapperuma. (NewsWire)
