Five suspects have been arrested for allegedly assaulting two Policemen at the Bellanthara Junction in Dehiwala.
The Dehiwala Police said the injured officers are a Police Constable and a Sergeant attached to the Traffic Control Unit of the Police Department.
Two cars and a motorcycle belonging to the suspects have been taken into Police custody.
The injured Police officers have been admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila.
The incident had occurred after the two Police officers had investigated five individuals who were misbehaving under the influence of alcohol.
An argument had ensued between the two parties after the Police Sergeant had requested the suspects to head home.
One suspect had thereafter punched the Sergeant on his face and had assaulted the two officers when they had attempted to block the assault by the suspects.
The Police said the Sergeant had sustained injuries to his face and the constable to his hands in the assault.
A group of Police officers who had arrived at the location had arrested four of the suspects, while the man who had punched the Sergeant is reported to have fled the area.
He had later surrendered to the Dehiwela Police through his lawyers.
The suspects will be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s court. (NewsWire)
