Pakistan has raised concerns over steps taken by Sri Lanka to impose a ban on the burqa and niqab.
Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Saad Khattak said the likely ban on niqab in Sri Lanka will only serve as injury to the feelings of ordinary Sri Lankan Muslims and Muslims across the globe.
He said via Twitter, that it will further affect today’s economically difficult time due to the coronavirus pandemic and other image related challenges faced by the country.
On Saturday (13), Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekera said he had signed a cabinet order banning the burqa, which now needs parliamentary approval.
He said the decision to ban the burqa and niqab was taken over national security concerns. (NewsWire)
at international fora, such divisive steps in the name of Security, besides accentuating economic difficulties, will only serve as fillip to further strengthen wider apprehensions about fundamental human rights of minorities in the country.
