Facebook to introduce special blood donations feature for SL users

Sri Lanka today became the latest country to receive a special blood donations feature on Facebook.

Facebook today announced the launch of the special tool, making Sri Lanka the 29th country to receive the blood donations feature.

Policy Programs Manager for Sri Lanka, Facebook Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama told reporters today that the feature will be available to Facebook users in Sri Lanka from tomorrow (27).

He said this has been introduced in collaboration with the Health Ministry, National Blood Transfusion Service Sri Lanka, and the Health Promotion Bureau.

Twenty-four blood banks in the country have been linked to the special feature.

Facebook users from the age of 18-55 will be able to sign up from tomorrow to obtain updates on blood donations, and blood requirements at the nearest blood centre or hospital.

Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama said the special tool has been introduced in a bid to increase the number of blood donors in Sri Lanka and to encourage more people to donate blood.

He further said who sign up for the feature will receive regular updates on blood requirements, while blood centres and hospitals will determine their eligibility to donate blood. (NewsWire)
