Two from new strain hit UK among arrivals infected with Covid in last 24 hours

Two returnees from the United Kingdom are among the six arrivals who were detected with the coronavirus over the last 24-hours ending at 06am today.

The United Kingdom has reported a new variant of the coronavirus in the past few weeks.

Authorities are yet to comment on whether these 2 patients have contracted the new variant of COVID-19 or not.

Last week, Sri Lanka took measures to suspend all flights arriving from the UK and also prohibited UK passengers from transiting in Sri Lanka.

The Covid Task Force said a Sri Lankan flight had already been dispatched to the Uk to repatriate Sri Lankans at the time of taking a decision to ban flights from the UK.

Head of the Task Force Army Commander Lt. Gen Shavendra Silva said passengers and crew of a flight that had arrived from the UK on last Wednesday have been quarantined together at a separate hotel.

The cabinet of Ministers too recently told reporters that Sri Lanka is on alert on the new strain of COVID-19 spreading in the UK and Europe. (NewsWire)
