Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was instructed not to attend National Security Council meetings due to various allegations raised over his behaviour, former President Maithripala Sirisena revealed.
Sirisena made the observation when testifying yesterday before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) appointed to investigate the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.
The IGP was not prohibited, but was informed not to attend due to certain reports on his behaviour, Sirisena said.
“When attending National Security Council meetings, the IGP arrives with two phones and is seen focusing on the phones in a corner. He is unaware of the decisions taken during the meetings. I personally advised him to be more attentive during the meetings on one particular occasion. He was reported to have dance at the 2018 Kandy Esala Perehera. He thereafter caused another scene by questioning teachers before students of a school in the Matara district,” Sirisena pointed out.
The former President said Pujith had personally requested for permission to sing during a musical event organized in Pollonaruwa, to which Sirisena had granted approval.
“The IGP had then gone on to sing nearly six songs, which is more than the usual number sung by a professional singer. As he was uncontrollable and as I was afraid that people might start slamming him, I decided to leave the event. Then Pujith stopped singing and came up to me and asked if he had sung well,” he said.
Maithripala Sirisena added that this was the conduct of the IGP of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
