SLMC accused of discontinuing Russian scholarships

The Association of Sri Lankan Graduates from Socialist Countries (ASLGSC) has called on the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to clarify its decision to discontinue recognition of certain Russian universities.

The Association states every year the Russian Government awards Sri Lankan students with over 40 scholarships, including 4-5 scholarships for Medicine, to state universities in Russia.

The students follow the standard procedure of cross checking with the SLMC on the approved list of universities when applying for Medicine.

However, this year, the SLMC has removed 3 of the approved universities after the students had applied and obtained confirmations on their scholarships from Russia, the Association has charged.

The SLMC’s decision has resulted in the scholarship holders being forced to decline their opportunity of receiving free education to study Medicine in the Russian Federation.

The Association of Sri Lankan Graduates from Socialist Countries further said if these medicine scholarships are declined, Sri Lanka will lose any future scholarships that will be awarded for free to local students. (NewsWire)
