Sri Lankan authorities are saying that they are taking all possible precautionary measures to prevent any oil leak from the vessel which caught fire off east coast in Sri Lanka.
All those who were in MT New Diamond Crude Oil Tanker has now been rescued including the captain.
The vessel was carrying 270,000 Metric Tonnes of crude oil & 1,700 tonnes of diesel.
Maritime route monitoring websites indicated that the mammoth vessel was heading to Paradip Port in India and was carrying crude oil from Kuwait. The fire and damage are likely to cause massive environmental damage and Sri Lankan Air Force has already dispatched aircraft and maritime assets for surveillance and disaster relief mission.
02 Russian Navy Ships which had arrived to Hambantota port has also joined the rescue operations according to Sri Lanka Navy.
Indian Coast Guard (ICG) also said that they have sent assistance.
