Millionaire beggar arrested in Kochchikade over theft

A beggar who was arrested over a robbery in Kochchikade has been identified as a millionaire residing in Pamunuwa in Maharagama, The Daily Mirror reported.

The man is said to have stolen a fruit cart while begging near the St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade.

Investigations have revealed that the 64-year-old man resides in an upstair- house, with the upper portion given out on rent.

The Police had found a hybrid car and another luxury car from the individual’s residence.

The man is reported to be earning a monthly income of Rs. 30,000 as rent from his tenants and a daily income of Rs.5000 by begging.

The Police had arrested the suspect after monitoring CCTV footage based on a complaint he had stolen a fruit cart at Jampetah Street in Kochchikade.

CCTV footage shows the beggar stealing the cart and pushing it away from the location, with investigations revealing he had paid Rs.5000 to another individual to deliver the cart to his residence. (Newswire)
