Kurunegala Municipal Council passes resolution to use taxpayers’ money for case filed against Mayor

A proposal to use taxpayers’ money to cover legal costs for the case filed against the Mayor of Kurunegala over the demolition of a building with archaeological value in Kurunegala has been passed by the Kurunegala Municipal Council.

The Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court issued warrants on Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharane and 04 others for demolishing the 13th Century King’s Court of King Bhuvanaikabahu II, dating back to the Kurunegala / Yapahuwa Kingdom Era, for a road development project.

The resolution to use taxpayers’ money to cover legal costs was passed when the Kurunegala Municipal Council members had met yesterday (17).

Thirteen (13) members had voted in favour of the resolution, while 03 had voted against.

One member from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya member, a member from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, and the former Kurunegala Municipal Councillor had voted against the proposal.

The Kurunegala Municipal Council intends to use Rs. 2.18 million from its funds as legal costs. (Newswire)
