No seat for NPP in Matara, Handunnetti out

Former Parliamentarian and National People’s Power (NPP) Matara district candidate Sunil Handunnetti has failed to secure a seat in Parliament following the General Elections 2020.

The final results for the Matara district reveal that the NPP failed to secure the necessary votes to be elected to Parliament.

The NPP had only managed to obtain 37, 065 votes in the Matara district, in comparison to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s 352,217 votes.

As a result, NPP’s Sunil Handunnetti, who has been a long-standing member of Parliament over the past few years, has lost his seat in Parliament.

In the 2015 General Elections too, Handunnetti lost after contesting from the Matara district and was elected to Parliament via the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s (JVP) National List.

Handunneti who has been a constant voice against corruption served as the Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in the former Parliament. (Newswire)
