“No need to consult SC on General Election” Strongly worded Letter from President’s Secretary to Election Commission

Last week National Elections Commission wrote to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requesting him to consult the Supreme Court on an issue with regards to the Parliamentary elections and when Parliament must convene.

National Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said that under the Constitution the new Parliament must convene three months after the old Parliament is dissolved.

Parliament was dissolved in early March and elections were scheduled to be held on 25th April. However as a result of the coronavirus the election has been postponed.

President secretary in his letter tells National Elections Commission, it is responsibility of NEC to decide on date of election and there’s no need to consult Supreme Court.
