Tamil Nadu-SL high-speed passenger ferry service likely from October

The high-speed passenger ferry from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, India to Kankesanthurai port in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka is likely to commence in the first week of October 2023.

According to Indian media, India’s Minister for Public Works EV Velu made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking to reporters after inaugurating the dredging operations at the Nagapattinam port.

The minister also conducted a review meeting over the ongoing works to commence the high-speed passenger ferry from Tamil Nadu to Sri Lanka. 

The passenger terminal is being set up at the Nagapattinam Port and it is reported that the works will be completed ahead of the commencement of the ferry service.

The minister told reporters that the route would cover a distance of 60 nautical miles and the ferry would have at least 150 passengers with the journey taking around two hours. 

The operations would be initiated by the Shipping Corporation of India and controlled by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), said the minister. 

Minister EV Velu added that the service will be beneficial for the education, health, commerce and tourism of Sri Lankans while the cultural exchange and economics in Tamil Nadu delta districts will develop manifold. (NewsWire)
