Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda has been appointed as the new Governor of the North-Western Province.
Karannagoda who served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy during the civil war worked in the capacity of Secretary to the Ministry of Transport under the regime of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda’s appointment comes following the death of former North-Western Province Governor Raja Collure due to COVID-19.
As Collure’s demise left the position of North-Western Province Governor vacant, Karannagoda has been appointed to replace him.
Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda was discharged this year from the case filed against him on the abduction, torture, extortion and conspiracy to murder 11 persons in 2008 and 2009.
In October 2021, the Attorney General informed the Court of Appeal not to proceed with the charges against Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda. (NewsWire)
