Another leopard dies after getting trapped in snare

Another leopard has died after being trapped in a snare in the Mapakanda area in Nawalapitiya today.

The Officer attached to the Nallathanniya Department of Wildlife Conservation Prabash Karunatileke said the leopard had got trapped in a snare attached to a coffee tree.

The leopard which had initially got entangled to a fence surrounding a farming land in the Mapakanda area is said to have broken free and climbed up the coffee tree where it had got trapped in the snare that was set on the tree.

The animal had died due to severe wounds sustained to its abdomen, he said.

The leopard, which is assumed to be 7 years, had been found based on information received from area residents.

Prabash Karunatileke said the body of the leopard will be moved to the Randenigala Animal Hospital after submitting a report to the Nawalapitiya Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
