Army Commander clarifies who can get Pfizer & Moderna vaccines

Army Commander General Shavendra Silva reiterated that the ‘Moderna’ or ‘Pfizer’ vaccines will only be administered to students who are expecting to travel abroad for higher education purposes.

Shavendra Silva further stated that there is no decision taken as of now to administer these vaccines for local university students. He also said that it’s mandatory for anyone requesting for these vaccines to produce documentation proofs related to their foreign education.

Yesterday, a large number of students from several local universities gathered near Army hospital in Narahenpita requesting for the Moderna vaccine. A tense situation followed after they were informed that the Moderna vaccine would not be administered to them.

Vice chancellor of the university of Kelaniya, Professor Nilanthi de Silva said that although it was previously decided to provide the Moderna vaccine for university students at Army hospital, however she said that the Army had informed her that it’s not possible to do so due to unavoidable circumstances.

She further stated that amended communication was conveyed to the relevant.

When the University Grants Commission was inquired on the same, Chairman professor Sampath Amaratunga has started that there was no request from the UGC to administer any specific vaccine for university students. (NewsWire)
