Bangladesh- Four Centuries since Christian Cemetery Established in Dhaka

The Christian Cemetery in Dhaka was mainly established 400 years ago for the European traders and their families who used to work for East India Company back during the 17th Century.

The tomb of Reverend Joseph Paget who died at the age of 26 years, the tomb was found in 1724 at the, is considered one of the oldest tombs and can be recognized by its architecture and the mausoleum that consists of a round dome with eight columns inside Narendra cemetery. The cemetery has undergone many transformations due to climate changes and other geographical factors.

Prof. Mokammal H. Bhuiyan, Department of Archaeology, Jahangirnagar University:

“We assume that this cemetery was founded in the 17th century. We know it is being established, but the first tomb was found in 1725. There are graves of different ethnic groups here. Such as those who were Christians- English, Dutch, Armenian, and Chinese. It should not be seen as just a graveyard..”
