BASL writes to IGP on arrest of Lawyer Hejaaz Hisbullah

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has written to the Inspector General of Police, expressing concerns on Hejaaz Hisbullah – a member of the BASL, being arrested while reasons for his arrest not being revealed.

Signed by BASL President Kalinga Indatissa, President’s Counsel, the letter also notes that the BASL is concerned about the well being of Mr. Hisbullah, as it is the BASL’s understanding that he has been arrested for his professional conduct as a member of the bar.

Hejaaz Hisbullah’s family has also issued a statement, stating that the lawyer currently being held in CID custody has never been a follower or preacher of extremist and hateful ideologies, but he has always countered them with his utmost ability. They also emphasize that the prominent lawyer is confident that he will be released soon without harm and he is ready to fully co-operate with the investigations carried out by the Criminal Investigations Department.

 

Meanwhile, Former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen had issued a press release, citing that the arrest of his brother on suspicions of being connected to the Easter Attacks is nothing but political victimization.
