“Black fungus” has been found in Covid patients reported from the Colombo, Kurunegala, and Ratnapura areas so far in Sri Lanka, the Health Ministry revealed.
The rare infection is generally discovered among recovering and recovered Covid-19 patients.
Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told the media today that the infection has also been observed among patients in several hospitals.
This aggressive infection affects the nose, eye, and sometimes the brain, and is caused by a fungus from the environment, while it mostly affects people with compromised immune systems.
People with several non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, are more prone to contracting the fungal infection, he explained.
Dr. Herath said it was essential to identify the people who are at high risk of being infected with the ‘Balck fungus.” (NewsWire)
