Mongolia has a high burden from non-communicable diseases, with cancer now the second leading cause of mortality. One-fifth of all mortality in Mongolia are cancer deaths and the death toll in 2020 is 4.5 thousand, this indicates that cancer has reached catastrophic proportions in Mongolia. According to a study, this number will double by 2040.

“The second most common cause of death is cancer in Mongolia. As of 2020, 6,700 new cases of cancer have been reported nationwide and more than 4,200 people have died from cancer. The number of cancer registered in the Mongolian population is increasing year by year. As a result, the death toll is rising. The question arises as to what the future trends of this will be. It is estimated that by 2030, the number of registered cancers will double unless significant measures are taken to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer.”
“The question is why Mongolians have more cancer than people in other parts of the world, and what is the problem. There are countries where the cancer incident is more prevalent than in Mongolia. However, we have a high mortality rate. Today, there are few countries like Mongolia with a population of about 3 million. However, our country leads the world in the number of deaths from certain types of cancer. The main reason for this is that today the majority of patients, or more than 70 percent, are diagnosed late.”

“Cancer incidence has been increasing in Mongolia in recent years. The most common cancers in our country are liver, stomach, esophagus, lung, cervical, and breast cancers. That they are separate organs, the reasons are also different. For example, liver cancer cases reported in Mongolia are mostly caused by hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Lung cancer is associated with air pollution and smoking. Esophageal cancer is associated with the consumption of hot foods, tea, and salt. Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus. Helicobacter pylori is a major cause of gastric cancer.”
