The Catholic Church of Sri Lanka has condemned Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s recent comments on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.
In a special address to the nation, Wickremesinghe said the assistance of the UK government and their intelligence services will be sought to conduct a comprehensive probe into the terrorist attacks.
Responding to the statement, the Spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Colombo Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando condemned the Acting President.
Speaking to reporters in Colombo today, he said Sri Lankan authorities should have sought the assistance of the Scotland Yard, Interpol, and other global law enforcement agencies to investigate the attacks.
Criticizing Ranil Wickremesinghe for his delayed action in seeking such international assistance for an independent inquiry, Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando accused him of using the pain of the victims to become President of the country.
He further said that the statements of the Acting President cannot be believed as they are mere deception, adding that such statements were an insult to the victims of the attacks, as well as to those who are seeking justice. (NewsWire)
