Catholic Church issues clarification on Cardinal’s statement criticising Maithri

The Catholic Church of Sri Lanka has appealed not to politicize the recent statement made by the Archbishop of Colombo, His eminence, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

Issuing a special statement, Rev Father Cyril Gamini Fernando said the Cardinal’s statement was not meant as an attack on any politician.

Stating that the Easter Sunday attacks is considered as a national crime by the Catholic Church, he said the threat still remains.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith had issued a statement directed at former President Maithripala Sirisena on the 2nd anniversary of the Easter Sunday attacks.

Sirisena and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party had thereafter expressed their regret over the Cardinal’s statement. (NewsWire)
