Sri Lanka risks facing power cuts of 10 hours after the 31st of December 2022, head of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Engineers’ Union Nihal Weeraratne warned today (20).
Nihal Weeraratne said the stock of coal at the Lakvijaya Power Station in Norochcholai is only sufficient to produce electricity until the 31st of December.
Thereafter, three generators of the Lakvijaya Power Station in Norochcholai will have to be inactive and will not generate electricity, he said.
Stating that 45% of the power requirement of the nation is being generated by the Norochcholai power plant, Weeraratne said in the event the three generators are disconnected, this will result in 10 hours of power cuts.
He pointed out that the water levels of hydropower plants have reduced to 75%, adding that it is not possible to reach sufficient levels in the next few months.
The head of the CEB Engineers’ Union warned that this may result in a severe crisis and bring the nation to a standstill. (NewsWire)
