To ensure uninterrupted power supply for 2023, CEB estimates 1 unit of electricity will cost Rs 56.90, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekara said.
The Minister made this statement on his official twitter handle.
However, he said that the current average tariff is at Rs 29.14 & the deficit is estimated to be Rs 423.5 Billion.
Every layer of electricity users should be charged Rs 56.90/- per unit & a direct cash allowance must be provided for low-income families, the Minister highlighted.
The lower layers are heavily subsidized & the top layer pays over the average cost of a unit to compensate a part of the subsidy, and the balance subsidy is borne by the treasury, the Minister added.
“My personal opinion is that every layer should be Rs 56.90/- per unit & a direct cash allowance for low-income families”, he further noted. (NewsWire)
