Message from Power & Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara
Two weeks ago I requested the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) management for information regarding loan facilities extended to CEB employees & on new recruitments.
Data provided by the CEB finance division shows that financial facilities extended to CEB employees amounts to about Rs 12 Billion & that 2/3rds of the employees loan interest component is paid by the CEB.
The interest paid by the CEB on behalf of its employees is recovered from the consumer tariffs.
I have directed the CEB managment to implement a mechanism to recover the loan & interest amounts from the beneficiary’s of the loans & not to pass it to the electricity consumers
I have also asked them to report on any services that can be outsourced in the future to be more efficient & reduce cost.
