A tense situation and clashes have been reported outside Temple Trees in Colombo between supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and individuals protesting against the government.
The clash had erupted after Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters of the Prime Minister who had attended a meeting at Temple Trees this morning had confronted anti-government protesters.
The anti-government protesters, including monks and veteran soldiers, have been at the protest site that has been set up in front of the Prime Minister’s official residence and has remained in place over the last few weeks.
Despite heavy Police presence in the area, the SLPP supporters of the Prime Minister have reportedly assaulted the peaceful public protesters who have been calling for the Prime Minister to step down over the country’s failed economy and other issues.
The SLPP supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have also removed and set fire to the tents and other protest-related materials that belonged to the anti-government protesters outside the Temple Trees. (NewsWire)
