The Ministry of Power and Energy has advertised a Spot Tender for the procurement of coal.
Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that the spot tender has been advertised following the International Competitive Bidding method.
The tender has been opened for registered suppliers and any supplier capable of supplying Coal with a minimum 180-day credit facility.
The long-term Tender for Coal Procurement will be advertised by next week, he added.
The coal crisis has come about after the coal tender that was awarded on 25 August was cancelled by the Cabinet last week.
Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that the tender was cancelled on a request made by the Ministry of Power and Energy.
The selected supplier has communicated the inability to perform the tender citing concerns about the impact on legal cases filed and payment guarantee risk, he added.
Sri Lanka is facing an imminent power crisis due to a lack of coal to power the coal power plants in the country.
According to relevant authorities, Sri Lanka is only in stock of coal until the 28th of October.
They have warned that this may result in the daily power cuts being extended to 08-10 hours. (NewsWire)
